Not only does this anxiety increase your chances of failing, or getting a lower pass mark, but can lead you to feelings of low self-esteem and a lack of confidence.
Yet many take up the arts to gain self-control and develop confidence and high esteem so that the quality of life improves. Grading is a test, and a way for you, and your instructor to calibrate your progress and development.
So why do many students have such an awful time and screw themselves up?
Simple, your own mind is undisciplined, and not in your control. More accurately it is your unconscious control mind, also called your subconscious, that part of your brain that dates back to a lizard, which controls your emotions, habits, opinions and beliefs.
It is also the part of your brain that allows you to become sub-consciously competent, and move without thought, with blinding speed and power. This is often the desired result as thinking is to slow in combat. Just like any other skill you have to train and practice to develop this skill.
Ultimately the arts are about learning about you, developing skill, power, confidence. They are also about an ability to control your energy, your emotional state and your intent.
All the arts if studied under the rarest of people: a master who has not only have trained their bodies to an exceptional level of skill but have also done the same with the mental and emotional sides of their nature.
So, what is my background? How do I know this? Why am I able to point you in the right direction and help you to overcome the worry, fear and anxiety that, until now, you have allowed to affect you negatively?
My name is Paul Hastings, and I started in the arts many years ago. Mainly Judo and Hapkido. Hapkido has been my mistress for many years now. In my time I have taken many gradings, both as a student and as an instructor grading students.
I’ve had my share of grading nerves until I was guided by some of the Masters I have been privileged to learn from. Although I have given up teaching publicly, I continue the practice.
Part of what they directed me to do was to develop the skills of a traditional martial artist and warrior. So not only was I told to acquire the physical skills, but also to learn about, anatomy, physiology, acupuncture and energy psychology. I also discovered to use firearms, and other weapons and how to use the most potent weapon we have - Our own minds.
As we no longer use horses for transport, I learnt evasive and defensive driving and became an advanced driver. I learned to fly an aeroplane and for a while owned two. I also discovered how to build them, and yes they “both still flying”.
More importantly for you. I also studied and mastered Hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Emotional Freedom Therapy, and have been in private practice as a therapist since 1991.
During all this time I have used the skills I possess on many occasions. I have often been frightened, scared and had my life on the line.
I have crashed microlights, cars, - and relationships. On occasions I have been attacked for real and had to deal with it, and, yes, I have also failed gradients and had to develop the emotional skills to deal with it, and come back stronger to succeed.
So you could say “ I’ve been there, done it and got the tee shirt.”

If you get it wrong it can be disastrous. So you do learn to control fear and develop the necessary skills.

A hypnotist and Hapkido friend of mine asked me if it was possible to do a head stand on broken glass. I did not know. My First attempt. I just did it. Sometimes life is like that. You just have to go for it and find out what happens.

Does it mean that you will never experience fear again?
NO. Fear is a good thing. It can keep you alive. It is mother nature, god or evolution's way of telling you to switch on, and pay attention, and do what needs to be done. You then turn it off, or use it, and move.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is just blowing smoke up your? In order to develop massive self-confidence and competence in your martial art or combat system, you need to remove irrational fears and learn to use fear with the enormous power it gives you.

Many people use stress as an excuse not only in life but also during training. All stress is self-induced, you create it, in fact, it is impossible for anything to stress you if you change your stress response. With practice that can be under your control.
A part of your brain is unable to tell the difference between what is real and what you imagine. That's why you can worry over something in an imaginary future that may never exist, and feel the emotions when it hasn't and may never happen. Many of the causes for our messing ourselves up, are imagined. They never actually happen, we made it all up.

Much of your beliefs about life and yourself, were programmed into you at an earlier age. They came from well-meaning people who, in all honesty, did not have the knowledge to guide you correctly. Some of them may have even come from you. Have you ever noticed people say: “I always been that way” “I am like my mum or dad” ‘I got that from my parents” “I can never do that” "I was taught to do it this way"?
As you know from training at one level a technique is correct, at another, you are taught to do it differently, as your skill improves, and you can do the technique faster and with more power. The same thing happens in our minds and lives.
On occasions, this recording has enlightened martial artists, as well as uncovering some realities that could save your life and years of wasted training.
Martial art may be useless when you need to defend yourself. Some fighting arts are useless out of the ring, or off the mat, and in the real world against an experienced street fighter. Or even a keen amateur, I know many black belts who have been taken out by a "nobody."
A really cool guy once told me “I don't need to be better, quicker or faster than you to take your head off, I just need to know how to jam your systems.”

A long time ago, apparently a guy told people to “Love thy neighbour, as yourself”. Pretty good advice and most people do love others, just as well as they like themselves, and that is the problem.
Most people do not like themselves, have a little self-respect, control and personal power, they beat themselves up, swear at themselves when they mess up, tell themselves they are thick, dumb or unable to take action.
They train themselves to be a victim, martial artists would argue against this until I point out that they are a victim to themselves, due to an undisciplined and untrained mind.
You get the idea, without deep self-love and respect, you cannot love or care or have valid consideration for anyone else. An old Hapkido master once said to me “ if you argue with your wife and children, your Hapkido is no good”
The second part of the title will give you understanding as to what this recording is about. You may discover that with true self-love, you can train harder because when you know your body needs rest, you give it.
